| Van Buren County was not a political entity at the time of the Revolutionary War. Yet, some of the men who fought did settle in the area which was a part of either Bledsoe, Warren or White counties until its formation on 3 January 1840. Despite the fact of its formation date, there is no 1840 census for the county. There is in existence an 1841 tax list which we hope to reproduce on these pages at some time in the future. | |
WAR of 1812 |
|
| Again, Van Buren County had not come into existence at the time of this second engagement with Great Britain. There can be found in military records references to individuals who can be found in the 1850 U.S. and first census of Van Buren County, TN. These individuals records would be found in Bledsoe, Warren or White county records prior to 1840.
Bone Cave is now in Van Buren County and there is evidence that these pre-Van Buren countians took part in the War of 1812 as briefly offered below. According to Tennessee Records: Tombstone Inscriptions, Warren Co., TN History: Sometime while Andrew Jackson and his army were at New Orleans, word came to the settlement that the General's powder was running low. Immediately Reuben Roberts, Elijah Drake, Peter Buren, Peter Nuckoll, George Sanders and others from material gotten from the Big Bone Cave and other places, made a large quantity of powder, packed it in wagons drawn by oxen and cutting a new and direct route as they went, by Short Mountain, Rutherford and Davidson counties to Nashville, loaded the powder on flat boats and sent it to New Orleans to General Jackson. (Taken from letters of Capt. John R. Roberts.) The road so cut and traveled was called the old road to Nashville and is mentioned in Warren Co. Road Books as late as 1858. Isaac Drake and his two brothers Jacob and Elijah had numerous real estate transactions in Warren County from 1807 until 1818. The brothers jointly purchased 115 acres including Big Bone Cave along with 1 furnace and 3 kettles in 1818. This cave was known for production of saltpeter which was used in the manufacture of gunpowder. They sold their interest to Randolph Ross in 1818. According to records Jimmy Hodges located, his ancestor, William Denny was a corporal in the War of 1812 under Capt. William Hodges' Co. of Inf., Col. S. Copeland's Reg't Tennessee Militia. |
