Guilford Burns

I was wondering if you have any information on Guilford Burns born 1792 in NC and his wife Tabitha Jane Burns.  They had two children John and Sally or Sarah Burns.  They show up on the 1860 Perry County Census.  Guilford died shortly after the census.  Tabitha Jane later married Moses Griffin and shows up in the 1870 Perry County census.

Enoch Hooper

I am looking for information on Enoch Hooper (d. aft. 1841) and his extended family. He lived in Perry County, TN after leaving the Carolinas. He had two brothers who settled in Humphreys County, TN by the name of Bailey Hooper (b. 1769) and John Hooper. It is thought that Enoch married a Roberts woman. It is believed that Enoch may have practiced the black smith trade as he inherited all his father's black smithing tools. Enoch had a son by the name of Dempsey James Hooper who later settled in Texas and was an accomplished black smith. If you can help, I would appreciate your contacting me.

Kelly, Jesse

My grandfather was a Civil War Union Volunteer. I have his enlistment and discharge.   His enlistment contains: Jesse Kelly, State of Tennessee, Town of Clifton, age 23, by occupation a farmer, volunteered on February 20, 1864 to serve as soldier in the Army of the United States of America for the period of one year......
Lt. J.W. Taylor, recruiting officer, 2nd Regiment of Mounted Infantry Volunteers.  Hazle eyes, black hair, fair complexion, 5' 81/2".  Discharged on March 4, 1865. In this document, Lt. Taylor is now Captain John W. Taylor. It also adds Company F to 2nd Regiment of Mounted Infantry.

Jesse married Mary Melinda Hunt on December 21, 1865.

Any information that you have or any leads for more interesting stories or facts about my grandfather would be much appreciated.

Pogue, Martha  I was wondering if I could get more information if any exists on Martha Pogue. She is my ancestor, and I have tried without success to discover if she had a husband so I could trace my line farther back. I know she was in her 80's or 90's living in Perry County when she died. My father believes she is buried in Flowers Cemetary as she lived with her daughter Cassandra Flowers who married James Flowers. Her birth year would be estimated around 1792, possibly 3 different states as her place of birth on the east coast. She seems to have moved around Tennessee some in her earlier years. I found mention although not the record of the deed to the Flowers farm, so its possible an address exists of the place where she was living when she died. Any information would be great.

One thing I forgot to mention in my studies earlier. The eldest daughter of Martha Pogue, Isabella, (possibly only one l in the name) shows a tennessee marriage record to one Elijah Maxwell, but no census record shows her later under that name, or mentions Elijah. After doing some digging, I saw an Elijah Maxwell in some war records supposedly having been a member of Captain Sparkman's Brigade during the Civil War. According to the GenWeb, Perry County is working on stories and data regarding the Civil War, if so this same individual could easily have been her husband. If so, then he went to war on behalf of the South right after marriage, and during a major conflict where the Brigade was used as Heavy Artillery, Sparkman and over half the unit were killed. Sick, they were forced to walk home on foot, where they were arrested for war crimes(after having been pardoned). It is likely Elijah Maxwell never survived the war. I don't know if any Confederate records mention family members, but it might be useful research, thought I would include this.

Qualls, Smitha Hilburn My daughter and I are working on her application for the Daughters of Republic of Texas (DRT)
Her GGGGgrandfather Richard Hilburn left Perry County in the 1830's. He served in the US Mexican War and was a Texas Ranger, and so on.

Some of his family stayed and some went with him. His daughter, Smitha Hilburn married Riley Qualls c. 1846. She was born March 5, 1829 and died c. 1919 in Perry County, probably around Brush Creek. I have found no record at the Tn State Archives web site of her death.  The DRT's Registar is requesting a death certificate for Smitha and proof of her connection to Richard Hilburn. The 1820's census just list how many lived in the household and did not give names.  Any help will be appreciated.

James Night/Knight

I wanted to give you some information on the Civil War Veterans of Perry County page.  Something that I found while searching for my GGG Grandfather  James Night / Knight.  I found him in the Linden area of Perry county in 1850 and 1860 census.  Sometime between 1862 and 1870 he disappeared.  I believe that he was a casualty of the Civil war.  But there were several James Night / Knights on both sides and I haven't been able to tie any of them in to my family tree.  GGG Grandpa James last child John was born Nov 1862 and his widow GGG Grandma Martha A Knight and most of her children showed up in Decatur county for the 1870 census.

I also found James H Knight of Perry County with "I" Co. of  the 14th Tennessee Cav. and a pension #  S 14025 and almost jumped out of my socks!!!   So I submitted a couple of Military records search requests to TSLA and when I got the return, I was disappointed!   They told me that James Knight was indeed listed in the book "Tennesseans in the Civil War", but they could not locate his service records.   When they went to their index for James H Knight and pension # S 14025, they found the micro film listing him as James H "McKnight" of Pope, Perry County, TN.  He tried to get his pension in 1913, due to the disabilities that he received in the war and they kept putting him off till he Died in 1930.  His wife (Not Martha) then tried to get the benefits and I don't know if she ever got them.  This was well after James Night / Knight disappeared.  GGG Grandma Martha A Knight died in 1900 and is buried in Decatur County, TN.  Obviously not the same person that I was looking for.

So If you ever come across James Night or Knight (DOB 1826), Martha A (1826) let me know.    I do have a fairly good line on their children Caladona J (Md. Barnes), Mesenus Franklin, William James (My GG Granddad), Sarah J. (Sutton), Thomas Wesley, Martha Elizabeth (Broadaway, Treece) and  John B Knight.  However, if you see anything on them I would also be interested.

-------

Dec 20 addendum: Some new found family lore. James Night/Knight didn't die in the War. Supposidly in 1864/65 he was on his horse, in the Tennessee River, or trying to cross the River . Two "Carpet Baggers" jumped him and pushed him into the River, causing him to drown. They apparently wanted his farm. I had never heard this story before, but it came from one of the older children of James' son William James Knight.
